In some cases separating the art from the artist is possible. I'm not going to lecture you, but I'm not going to ease your conscience either. We do not care about how you've justified support for a certain video game through contorted logic or loopholes. I think I speak for many trans people when I say: We’ve seen several of the stars from the Harry Potter franchise speak up against her transphobia and it’s disappointing to see the studio using her IP stay quiet.
Just having trans options in the character creation, whatever that means like what we saw happen with Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation, isn’t a proper statement against transphobia. Although they’ve distanced themselves from JK Rowling in this way, they haven’t done anything else, like condemn her harmful rhetoric. This is a point that the studio has emphasized in their Q&A section on their website. However, the relationship that many queer people, especially trans people, have with the Harry Potter franchise has changed since JK Rowling has begun embracing and vocally supporting TERF (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist, for those who don’t know) ideologies.Įven though there’s absolutely no involvement of JK Rowling in the development of Hogwarts Legacy other than the use of her IP, she ultimately will have some type of profit from it. The team at Portkey Games clearly put a lot of passion and work into the game creating a product that looks like the ideal Harry Potter game.
Warner should match however much JK Rowling will make from Hogwarts Legacy in donations to support groups and organizations that work hard to defend the rights of transgender people in different parts of the world.An open-world Harry Potter game is something that Potterheads have wanted for years, and it’s hard to blame them. But why not do the right thing and make up for the hate, violence and transphobia JK Rowling preaches? If they must profit from hate, they should at least try to balance the scales a little bit. Warner is a company and companies aim to profit, that's clear. But, as with any product that uses Harry Potter, she will profit. In an effort to distance themselves from Rowling, Warner claims she had no involvement with the game. Interactive Entertainment, will release a game called Hogwarts Legacy. Recently, it was announced that Portkey Games, a company that belongs to Warner Bros. What used to be discreet transphobia is now overt: her new book is about a man that "cross-dresses" to murder women. She has a massive platform that she uses to continuously broadcast hate against transgender people, influencing people to become bigots just like her. It has become clear that JK Rowling, the once beloved author of the Harry Potter series, is a transphobe.
